Obverse description The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a heraldic shield bearing horizontal lines and a central five-pointed star, supported by two leopards rampant facing inward, surmounted by a mural crown. A crossed spear and palm frond appear beneath the shield as base ornaments. The Somali legend JAMHURIYADDA DIMOQRAADIGA SOOMAALIYA arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the Arabic equivalent جمهورية الصومال الديمقراطية curves along the lower periphery, both legends separated by small dot stops.

Additional information

Somalia's 1976 shilling was issued as part of the FAO coin program, a United Nations initiative that ran from the late 1960s through the 1980s encouraging member nations to mint coins promoting food production and agricultural development. Somalia under Siad Barre's Scientific Socialist government was at that point still receiving substantial foreign aid and maintaining reasonable diplomatic relationships before the catastrophic Ogaden War with Ethiopia — which began the following year — unraveled the country's finances and effectively ended any coherent monetary policy for a generation.
