| Obverse description | The colourised obverse features the full coat of arms of Zimbabwe centrally positioned in the field, depicting two kudus as supporters flanking a shield quartered with the Zimbabwe Bird, water waves, and green and red sections, surmounted by a red star above crossed implements and a helmet. The denomination '1' appears in the upper field above the arms, with the legend 'SHILLING' arcing above. The national motto 'UNITY . FREEDOM . WORK' is inscribed on a ribbon at the base of the arms, with 'REPUBLIC OF ZIMBABWE' forming the lower legend and the date '2018' above it. |

Zimbabwe's post-2009 monetary history is a tangle of adopted currencies and failed substitutes, and this coin sits in one of its stranger chapters. After the collapse of the Zimbabwe dollar and years of using the US dollar and South African rand as de facto tender, the government introduced "bond coins" beginning in 2014 — nominally pegged to the US dollar, accepted in practice by a population that had no better option. This shilling, issued under that framework, commemorates the F-22 Raptor, an American stealth fighter that entered USAF service in 2005 and has never been exported to any foreign military.
