Gambia's 1966 coinage was struck in anticipation of independence, which had been granted by Britain in February 1965 — making this among the first purpose-designed issues for the new nation rather than a continuation of British West African Board of Currency coinage. The Gambia Currency Board was itself a transitional institution, replaced by the Central Bank of The Gambia in 1971 when the country decimalized and introduced the dalasi.
