The effigy is rendered in fine relief with delicate detailing to the hair and neckline. New Zealand retained the shilling denomination into the mid-1960s purely by inertia — the Decimal Currency Act of 1964 set the country on course for conversion in 1967, rendering this entire series obsolete within a few years of its last striking. The two KM varieties reflect a modification to the obverse portrait rather than any change in monetary policy or metal composition.
Machin's refined effigy replaced Gillick's original in 1965, accounting for the KM#27.2 distinction.
