Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, as modelled by Mary Gillick, wearing a laurel wreath with ribbons tied at the back of the head. The effigy is rendered in fine relief with delicate detailing to the hair and neckline. The circular legend reads '+ QUEEN·ELIZABETH·THE·SECOND' around the periphery, with the engraver's initials 'M·G·' positioned at the lower left of the bust. The design is enclosed by a continuous beaded border.

Additional information

New Zealand retained the shilling denomination into the mid-1960s purely by inertia — the Decimal Currency Act of 1964 set the country on course for conversion in 1967, rendering this entire series obsolete within a few years of its last striking. The two KM varieties reflect a modification to the obverse portrait rather than any change in monetary policy or metal composition.

Machin's refined effigy replaced Gillick's original in 1965, accounting for the KM#27.2 distinction.
