Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, as modelled by Mary Gillick, wearing a laurel wreath with ribbons tied at the back of the head. The effigy is rendered in fine relief with delicate detailing to the hair and neckline. The circular legend reads '+ QUEEN·ELIZABETH·THE·SECOND' around the periphery, with the engraver's initials 'M·G·' positioned at the lower left of the bust. The design is enclosed by a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description A Maori warrior is depicted kneeling in dynamic posture at centre, bare-chested and wearing a traditional flax skirt (piupiu), holding a taiaha (long weapon) across his body. The design, engraved by George Kruger Gray, is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the musculature and costume. The legend 'NEW ZEALAND' arcs across the upper field, while 'ONE SHILLING' curves along the lower portion; the date appears to the right of the central device. The engraver's initials 'KG' appear in the lower central field, and the design is framed by a beaded border.
