Zambia's 1964 coinage was struck in anticipation of independence on October 24th of that year, making this shilling part of a transitional series that retained British denomination nomenclature while establishing a new national identity. The shilling designation was short-lived — Zambia decimalized its currency in 1968, replacing the pound-shilling system with the kwacha and ngwee, so this type had a circulation window of roughly four years.
