Additional information

Lübeck's gold pattern coinage of 1750 occupies an odd corner of German numismatic history — the city was producing probe pieces at a moment when its commercial influence had shrunk dramatically from its Hanseatic peak, yet civic pride demanded the trappings of a fully sovereign minting authority. A gold Sechsling pattern makes little economic sense: the Sechsling was a base copper denomination, and striking one in gold served no monetary purpose whatsoever. This was almost certainly a presentation piece, produced for gifting to magistrates or visiting dignitaries.

Only a handful of confirmed examples are recorded against KM#Pn24.
