The cross is enclosed within a beaded inner border. Sabbioneta was a planned city built almost entirely from Vespasiano Gonzaga's personal ambition — he broke ground in 1558 and methodically constructed a ducal capital, complete with palace, theatre, and mint, on flat Lombard farmland. The coinage followed the city itself: an assertion of sovereign status rather than a response to economic need. Vespasiano held the Imperial title of Duke only from 1577, so this scudo predates that elevation, struck when his authority rested on the lordship granted by Philip II of Spain.
The Sabbioneta mint never produced large volumes. Surviving gold from this early period is genuinely scarce.
