The Virgin Mary stands to the left with bowed head, hands clasped in prayer. To the right, the prophetess Anna raises one hand in blessing, while Joseph stands at the far right holding a vessel containing a pair of doves, the traditional offering. Gregorio XVI was elected in February 1831 under extraordinary circumstances — a revolution had broken out in the Papal States before his coronation even took place, requiring Austrian military intervention to restore order. His pontificate began, in other words, with foreign troops suppressing his own subjects. The early scudo issues of 1831–1834 were struck against that backdrop of profound administrative fragility, with the papal mint at Rome functioning under conditions that were anything but settled.
The Austrian intervention left a lasting debt — financial and political — that shaped papal monetary policy throughout his reign.
