Beschrijving voorzijde Bare-headed, draped bust of Pope Gregory XVI facing left, wearing the papal zucchetto and an elaborately embroidered papal cope with floral and foliate motifs rendered in fine relief. The portrait is executed in a highly naturalistic Neoclassical style. The circular legend GREGORIVS·XVI reads from lower left to upper right, continued by PON·MAX·A·III on the right. The engraver's signature NIC. CERBARA appears in the lower exergue, flanked by the date 1833. A toothed border encircles the entire design.

Beschrijving keerzijde The Presentation of the Infant Jesus at the Temple, depicted in high relief in a Neoclassical style with five figures arranged on a raised platform. At centre, the Christ Child is held aloft and presented to the aged prophet Simeon, who extends his arms to receive the infant. The Virgin Mary stands to the left with bowed head, hands clasped in prayer. To the right, the prophetess Anna raises one hand in blessing, while Joseph stands at the far right holding a vessel containing a pair of doves, the traditional offering. The inscribed legend LVMEN AD REVELATIONEM GENTIVM arches across the upper field, and ROMA appears in the lower exergue. A toothed border frames the composition.

Aanvullende informatie

Gregorio XVI was elected in February 1831 under extraordinary circumstances — a revolution had broken out in the Papal States before his coronation even took place, requiring Austrian military intervention to restore order. His pontificate began, in other words, with foreign troops suppressing his own subjects. The early scudo issues of 1831–1834 were struck against that backdrop of profound administrative fragility, with the papal mint at Rome functioning under conditions that were anything but settled.

The Austrian intervention left a lasting debt — financial and political — that shaped papal monetary policy throughout his reign.
