At centre, the Christ Child is held aloft and presented to the aged prophet Simeon, who extends his arms to receive the infant. Gregorio XVI was elected in February 1831 under extraordinary circumstances — a revolution had broken out in the Papal States before his coronation even took place, requiring Austrian military intervention to restore order. His pontificate began, in other words, with foreign troops suppressing his own subjects. The early scudo issues of 1831–1834 were struck against that backdrop of profound administrative fragility, with the papal mint at Rome functioning under conditions that were anything but settled.
The Austrian intervention left a lasting debt — financial and political — that shaped papal monetary policy throughout his reign.
