Annibale Albani served as Cardinal Camerlengo during the sede vacante of 1721, the interregnum following the death of Clement XI in March of that year. The Camerlengo held the unique institutional authority to issue coinage during a papal vacancy — one of the few tangible expressions of his office's administrative continuity. The conclave that followed lasted only fifteen days, producing Innocent XIII, which kept this issue's production window exceptionally narrow.
Berman 2512 is among the finer sede vacante gold issues of the early eighteenth century by rarity metrics. Albani himself was a nephew of Clement XI, a dynastic connection that made his appointment as Camerlengo politically calculated rather than incidental.
