Asti's gold coinage during Charles of Orléans' tenure as count was an assertion of French dynastic ambition over a city the Orléans branch had held since the Visconti inheritance of 1392. Charles himself spent the years 1415 to 1440 as a prisoner in England following Agincourt, leaving Asti under ducal administration for a generation before he could exercise meaningful personal authority over its mint. This scudo belongs to the post-captivity period of his rule, struck after his return to France and his formal reassertion of Orléanist control over his Italian territories.
