Paulus of Russdorf served as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1422 to 1441, a tenure defined largely by the Order's deteriorating position following the catastrophic defeat at Grunwald in 1410 and the subsequent Peace of Thorn in 1411, which stripped the Order of significant territory and imposed a punishing indemnity. Coinage struck under Russdorf was partly a fiscal instrument for servicing that debt while maintaining the appearance of institutional authority in Prussia.
The Order's mint at this period operated under considerable financial strain, and silver content in schilling coinage had been debased progressively through the early fifteenth century.
