Johann von der Recke served as Master of the Livonian Order from 1549 to 1551, a tenure cut short by his death rather than political removal — an unremarkable end to an increasingly embattled institution. By this point the Order was fighting a losing administrative and military battle against the rising pressure of the Reformation, Polish-Lithuanian encroachment, and an imminent Russian threat that would culminate in the Livonian War of 1558. These schillings were among the last issues of a sovereign military order that had controlled the eastern Baltic for over three centuries.
The "flat top" designation distinguishes this die variety from the peaked variant, a distinction tracked in Haljak's reference work on Baltic coinage.
