Dorpat's bishops issued coinage under a perpetually contested authority — the Livonian Order, the Archbishop of Riga, and the city's own council all disputed episcopal prerogatives throughout the sixteenth century. Jodokus von der Recke, who held the see from 1543 until the Livonian War effectively ended the bishopric's independent existence, struck this schilling just over a decade before Dorpat fell to Ivan the Terrible's forces in 1558. After that siege, episcopal coinage from this mint ceased entirely.
