Jodokus von der Recke served as Bishop of Dorpat from 1543 until the city fell to Ivan the Terrible's forces in 1558, an event that effectively ended the Bishopric's independent coinage entirely. This schilling was struck during a period of acute pressure on the Livonian religious states, with the Livonian Order, the archbishopric of Riga, and the smaller bishoprics all minting debased billon as military expenditure drained reserves.
