The 1834 rupee pattern was produced as part of a broader effort to standardize coinage across the Company's three presidencies — Bombay, Bengal, and Madras — each of which had previously issued its own distinct currency. The unification project had been debated for years, and these trial pieces represent the working-out of that policy decision in metal before the Committee of Warehouses in London signed off on a final type.
The plain edge distinguishes it from the milled edge variant catalogued under the same program. Both were submitted for approval; the milled edge type ultimately won out for the circulating issue.
