Pakistan's monetary authority periodically commissioned pattern strikes to evaluate proposed design or compositional changes before committing to full production runs. This 1991 nickel brass plated copper piece was part of that testing process for a reduced rupee type — the plating technology itself was under evaluation, as plated coinage offered cost savings over solid alloy blanks but introduced new concerns about long-term wear and delamination in tropical circulation conditions.
