Siva Singha ruled Assam at a moment when the Ahom kingdom was reasserting itself after decades of Mughal pressure from the west. The Ahoms had repelled a major Mughal invasion at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, and coinage struck under subsequent rulers carried that hard-won independence as much as any political declaration could. Ahom silver rupees of this period were struck by hand using local dies, and the irregular fabric typical of these issues reflects workshop conditions far removed from the imperial mints at Patna or Dhaka.
At 11.50g, this piece conforms closely to the Mughal rupee weight standard — a deliberate economic pragmatism rather than deference.
