正面描述 Central field dominated by a bold five-stemmed tughra in Arabic calligraphy, the interlocking strokes of the royal cipher rendered in the characteristic Afghan hammered style with densely packed, deeply struck lettering filling the entire flan. The tughra serves as the royal monogram of Amir Sher Ali Khan, its vertical stems rising prominently above a curved baseline of intertwined script. Surrounding Arabic legends occupy the peripheral field, with the irregular hammered flan imparting a characteristically uneven border.

背面描述 The reverse displays densely arranged Arabic inscriptions in multiple registers filling the entire field, incorporating the mint name, regnal formula, and AH date in bold, intertwined calligraphy characteristic of Afghan hammered coinage of the period. Floral and foliate ornamental devices accent the interstices between the inscription bands, while a cluster of pellets and vegetal motifs embellish the upper field. The AH date appears in the lower portion of the field, and the overall composition is deeply struck on an irregular flan with no distinct border.

附加信息

Sher Ali Khan's second reign (1868–1879) reopened the question of Afghan monetary independence at a moment when both the British and Russian empires were pressing inward from opposite directions. This rupee was struck during the early consolidation of that reign, just a few years before the catastrophic Second Anglo-Afghan War would force Sher Ali to flee Kabul and die in Mazar-i-Sharif in 1879 before ever reaching the Russian sanctuary he sought.

KM#518 is sometimes confused with issues of his father Dost Mohammad; careful attribution to Sher Ali's second reign depends on the regnal dating.
