Additional information

Shah Jahan's early regnal years, from which this piece dates, were spent consolidating power after a rebellion he himself had led against his father Jahangir. The Patna mint — operating in Bihar, a strategically critical revenue province on the Ganges — was among the most active in the empire precisely because of its position controlling eastward trade and agricultural tax flows. Early Shah Jahan rupees are distinguished from his later coinage by the regnal year format adopted after 1631, making pieces from this narrow accession window straightforwardly datable.
