Shah Alam II nominally sat on the Mughal throne from 1759, but spent much of his reign either a fugitive or a pensioner of whichever power happened to control Delhi at the time — the Marathas, the British, and briefly the Afghans all had a hand in managing his affairs. Coins struck in his name by Hyderabad's feudatory mints like Kankurti reflect precisely this fiction: the Mughal imperial name used as legitimizing currency while the Nizam of Hyderabad exercised the actual authority.
Kankurti was among the smaller satellite mints operating under Hyderabad's monetary administration, and output was inconsistent throughout the period.
