Daulat Rao Scindia struck these rupees in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II long after the fiction of Mughal sovereignty had collapsed in practice — Shah Alam had been blinded by Ghulam Qadir in 1788 and spent his remaining years a pensioner under Maratha and then British protection. The continued use of his name on Gwalior coinage was a political convention, not a statement of allegiance.
The date range encompasses the Second Anglo-Maratha War, after which Daulat Rao ceded significant territory and influence to the East India Company under the Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon in 1803.
