Shah Alam Bahadur's reign lasted barely three years, bookended by a succession war against his brothers following Aurangzeb's death in 1707 and his own death in 1712. He spent much of his reign in military campaigns rather than consolidating administration, which makes output from provincial mints like Itawa — a secondary mint in the Doab region of present-day Uttar Pradesh — characteristically uneven in volume across regnal years.
The Itawa mint operated under local governors whose loyalty to Mughal authority was already fraying by this period. Coins from it are considerably scarcer than those of the major imperial mints at Surat or Lahore.
