The Nawabs of Arcot occupied an unusual constitutional position: nominally vassals of the Mughal emperor, they struck coinage in Muhammad Shah's name long after effective Mughal authority over the Deccan had collapsed. This rupee belongs to the period when Arcot was simultaneously courted and pressured by the French and British East India companies, each funding rival claimants to the nawabship. The mint continued issuing in Muhammad Shah's name through succession disputes that had nothing to do with Delhi.
The regnal year on Arcot issues does not reliably correspond to actual striking dates, complicating precise attribution within the 1737–1746 window.
