Jahangir's zodiac rupees were struck on his personal order beginning around 1618, replacing the standard imperial kalima with astrological imagery tied to the lunar month of his birth — a decision that scandalized orthodox courtiers and drew formal objections from ulema who considered the coins idolatrous. The "Kissing Gemini" type is among the most visually provocative of the series, and Jahangir's own memoirs, the Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri, confirm his obsessive interest in astrology as a governing philosophy rather than mere decoration.
Kashmir mint output for this type is scarcer than Agra or Lahore. The series was abandoned under Aurangzeb, who melted many examples on religious grounds.
