Jahandar Shah's reign lasted less than a year — he seized the Mughal throne in March 1712 after a war of succession against three brothers, then lost it in January 1713 when Farrukh Siyar defeated him at Agra. He was strangled in captivity shortly after. Coins struck in his name are consequently scarce across all mints, and Burhanpur issues are among the less frequently encountered.
Burhanpur, on the Tapti River in the Deccan, had functioned as a Mughal military and administrative base since Akbar's campaigns. The mint epithet Dar-us-Surur — "abode of delight" — was assigned to Burhanpur specifically.
