The International Year of the Family was declared by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and observed in 1994, prompting numerous member states to issue commemoratives. India's participation came through a stainless steel rupee — a practical choice given the country's long-running preference for base metal in low-denomination circulation strikes by this period. The KM#96.1 and KM#96.2 variants reflect differences in the mint mark placement, distinguishing output from the Bombay and Calcutta mints respectively.
