Gyanendra's first stint as king lasted just three days in June 2001, following the palace massacre that killed King Birendra and nine other members of the royal family. He was crowned a second time in October 2001 after Crown Prince Dipendra — who had fired the shots — died from a self-inflicted wound while technically on the throne in a coma. These coins, issued across 2001–2003, fall squarely within that turbulent succession period, when the legitimacy of the new reign was openly questioned and the Maoist insurgency was escalating toward its peak.
