Ali Gauhar was the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, who spent years as a fugitive from Delhi after fleeing Aurangabad in 1758. The Marathas exploited his legitimacy ruthlessly — striking coins in his name from their own mints, including Poona, effectively appropriating imperial Mughal authority to validate their own revenue collection without any genuine fealty to the man whose name appeared on the silver.
The regnal year 1180 in the AH calendar anchors this to 1766–67, deep within the period of Maratha dominance over northern and central India before Panipat's consequences had fully receded.
