Alamgir II reigned as Mughal emperor from 1754 to 1759, a figurehead controlled first by the wazir Imad ul-Mulk and later manipulated by the Marathas — he was eventually murdered by his own minister. The Bengal Presidency continued striking rupees in his name well after his death, a common East India Company practice of maintaining Mughal regnal fictions to ease commercial acceptance in Indian markets.
The regnal years 1171–1173 AH fall between 1757 and 1760 CE, straddling the Battle of Plassey. KM#8.2 is distinguished from the closely related 8.1 by its specific mint and couplet combination.
