Sri Lanka shifted to brass-plated steel for this issue as part of a broader cost-cutting realignment in the mid-2000s, abandoning the nickel-brass composition used in earlier rupee strikes. The change was driven by global nickel price spikes that made the older alloy increasingly uneconomical for high-volume circulation coinage.
