| Reverse description | The denomination is displayed in three scripts in the central field: in large Sinhala characters (රැපියලයි) above Tamil characters (ஒரு ரூபாய்), and below in Latin script ONE RUPEE. A stylised lotus blossom in bloom appears above the denomination inscription. | Additional information |
Sri Lanka shifted to brass-plated steel for this issue as part of a broader cost-cutting realignment in the mid-2000s, abandoning the nickel-brass composition used in earlier rupee strikes. The change was driven by global nickel price spikes that made the older alloy increasingly uneconomical for high-volume circulation coinage.
