The Bengal Presidency rupee of this period occupies a peculiar moment in British-Indian monetary history: the East India Company was still striking coins in the name of the Mughal emperor Alamgir II, maintaining the fiction of Mughal authority even as Company power consolidated rapidly following Clive's victory at Plassey in 1757. The Murshidabad mint, which produced this type, had effectively passed into Company control by this point, though the coins gave no indication of it.
The KM#475.4 attribution reflects a specific regnal year and mint mark combination that distinguishes it within a dense web of closely related varieties — misidentification between these Presidency rupees remains routine even among specialist dealers.
