Within a central circle in the field, a detailed fragment of a one-faced Slutsk belt produced by the Slutsk manufactory between 1776 and 1780, as exhibited in the National Museum of History and Culture of Belarus, is rendered with fine artistic detail. The circular legend РЭСПУБЛІКА БЕЛАРУСЬ (Republic of Belarus) arcs along the upper rim. The Slutsk belt was among the most expensive luxury objects producible in 18th-century Poland-Lithuania — a single sash could cost as much as a serf. Woven in silk and gold thread at the Slutsk manufactory founded by the Radziwiłł magnate family around 1757, the belts became a defining element of the Sarmatian aesthetic that dominated Polish-Lithuanian noble dress for over a century. The manufactory changed hands several times before closing after the partitions dismembered the Commonwealth.
Belarus has issued multiple coins in this series, each highlighting a different aspect of the belt tradition. This copper-nickel circulation-commemorative is the lower-denomination counterpart to a corresponding silver proof issue.
