Part of Belarus's mid-1990s through early 2000s commemorative rouble program, this piece honors Grigory Potapovich Glebov, the Soviet-era Belarusian actor and theatre director who spent decades at the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre in Minsk. The National Bank of Belarus issued commemoratives aggressively through this period, often in modest quantities, as hard currency collectibles at a time when the circulating rouble had been largely hollowed out by post-Soviet inflation.
Glebov received the Stalin Prize in 1946 for his stage work — an uncomfortable distinction that catalogs of this series rarely bother to mention.
