背面描述 A large floriated cross pattée occupies the central field, formed by two crossed scepters interlaced with a rose at the center, creating four lobed compartments each containing heraldic devices including lions, fleurs-de-lis, and the arms of Ghent. The elaborate symmetrical design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend, reading NISI DNS CVSTOD CIVITAT FRVSTRA VIGILANT with the date 1582, is drawn from Psalm 127 and translates as 'Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain,' a fitting motto for the revolting city of Ghent.

附加信息

Ghent's revolt against Spanish authority produced some of the most politically charged coinage of the sixteenth century, and this 1582 Rose Noble is among the sharpest examples of that defiance rendered in gold. The city had expelled its Spanish garrison in 1576 as part of the Pacification of Ghent, and by the early 1580s the radical Calvinist republic controlling the city was issuing its own currency as a direct assertion of autonomous authority — Spanish sovereignty be damned.

The choice to strike a Rose Noble was calculated. The type was English in origin, carrying associations with Protestant mercantile power at a moment when Ghent desperately needed English goodwill and investment. The full date on this piece distinguishes it from related issues; KM#13.1 variants with complete four-digit dates are notably less common than those with abbreviated chronograms.
