The eagle's head faces dexter. Arabic legend curves along the upper periphery reading the country name, while the denomination '١ ريال / 1R' and the dual date '1969-١٩٦٩' appear in the lower field. The inscription 'YEMEN ARAB REPUBLIC' is rendered in Latin characters along the lower rim. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

This piece was struck to honor Muhammad Mahmoud al-Zubayri, the poet and nationalist politician assassinated in April 1965 — a killing widely attributed to royalist forces during the Yemeni Civil War, though never conclusively resolved. Al-Zubayri had been a founding figure of the Free Yemeni Movement and a genuine intellectual voice in republican politics, making his death a significant propaganda loss for the Sana'a government.
The gold issue was produced in limited quantities alongside a silver counterpart, intended more for presentation and international circulation than domestic use. North Yemen's coin program in this period leaned heavily on commemoratives partly to generate hard currency through foreign collectors.
