The Al Busaid dynasty has ruled Oman continuously since 1744, when Ahmad ibn Said expelled the Persian Afsharid occupiers and was elected Imam — making it one of the longest-reigning dynasties in the Arab world. Oman's imperial reach once stretched to Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast, with Muscat controlling trade routes that linked India, East Africa, and the Persian Gulf simultaneously.
