Markus Sittikus von Hohenems was elected Archbishop of Salzburg in 1612 after the death of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had been deposed and imprisoned by Bavarian forces the previous year — a remarkably turbulent transfer of power even by the standards of prince-archbishoprics.
