Reverse description The two crowned Pillars of Hercules, representing the Strait of Gibraltar, flank a central cross dividing the field into four sections, with the legend PLVS VLTR(A) — the Spanish royal motto — disposed around the design. The mintmark, assayer initial, and denomination mark appear in the fields between the pillars, consistent with Lima cob coinage of the early 18th century. The flan is irregular in shape and the strike is characteristically off-center, as is typical of hammered macuquina pieces of this period.
