The word 'Protea' and the denomination 'R1' are integrated into the design within separate panels. The engraver's initials 'AM' appear in the lower right field. The composition conveys a sense of diversity and innocence through its fragmented, puzzle-like artistic arrangement. |

The United Nations designated 1979 as the International Year of the Child, but South Africa — then deep in the apartheid era — was in no position to issue commemorative coinage aligned with international humanitarian initiatives. This 1998 release is a retrospective issue, struck nearly two decades after the fact, a pattern the South African Mint used during the 1990s to fill thematic gaps from the politically isolated years it had simply missed.
