An ornate decorative background of interlaced African-inspired scrollwork fills the field behind the figures. The denomination R1 appears in the lower right field. A lengthy inspirational quotation referencing Ubuntu encircles the design along the inner border, reading: 'that profound African sense that we are human only through the humanity of other human beings — The Spirit of Ubuntu'. The reverse was engraved by Thinus Scheepers, with initials MJS noted in the lettering. |
