| Obverse description | Draped bust of Nelson Mandela facing three-quarters to the right, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture detail, framed at the lower field by a decorative arrangement of protea flowers in full bloom. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 2019 divided across the lower field flanking the portrait. The engraver's initials VLC appear in the lower right field.
