South Africa's shift to the rand system in 1961 replaced the pound sterling-based coinage that had defined the country since Union. These English-legend issues ran parallel to an identical Afrikaans series — KM#71.2 — with both struck simultaneously to satisfy the country's constitutional requirement for linguistic parity between English and Afrikaans on all official currency. The two types were distributed in roughly equal numbers, though collectors have long noted slightly lower survival rates for the English versions in top grades, likely a reflection of Afrikaans-dominant regional circulation patterns.
Production ended in 1968 when South Africa abandoned silver for nickel in the rand series, a cost-driven decision tied to rising global silver prices.
