South Africa's shift to the rand system in 1961 replaced the pound sterling-based coinage that had defined the country since Union. These English-legend issues ran parallel to an identical Afrikaans series — KM#71.2 — with both struck simultaneously to satisfy the country's constitutional requirement for linguistic parity between English and Afrikaans on all official currency.
