The Pretoria Mint opened in 1923, ending South Africa's dependence on the Royal Mint branch that had operated on the same site since 1892. This 1974 issue marked the mint's fiftieth year of independent operation — a milestone the South African government was keen to observe publicly, coming as it did while the country's gold production still dominated global supply and the rand remained pegged to gold at a fixed official rate.
The .800 silver specification places it outside the republic's standard bullion coinage of the period, which used .925 for proof issues.
