| 裏面の説明 | The central vignette presents an intaglio view of the Edificio del Banco de Guatemala headquarters in Guatemala City, rendered in fine line engraving against a light guilloche background. To the left stands the Placa de Leyden, a pre-Columbian Maya jade plaque with an accompanying hieroglyphic inscription column. To the right of the building appears the circular Ara de Tikal seal, with Maya decorative motifs and denomination numerals completing the corners. |

The 1998 series quetzal notes represent the tail end of Guatemala's long relationship with Thomas De La Rue before the country transitioned to polymer substrate issues in the following decade. Guatemala had used De La Rue for successive quetzal series since the mid-twentieth century, and by the late 1990s the format and security package were largely unchanged from earlier printings — the watermark and embedded thread being the full extent of the anti-counterfeiting measures, modest even by regional standards of the period.
P#99 circulated heavily in everyday commerce and worn examples vastly outnumber clean ones in dealer stock today.
