The 1998 series quetzal notes represent the tail end of Guatemala's long relationship with Thomas De La Rue before the country transitioned to polymer substrate issues in the following decade. Guatemala had used De La Rue for successive quetzal series since the mid-twentieth century, and by the late 1990s the format and security package were largely unchanged from earlier printings — the watermark and embedded thread being the full extent of the anti-counterfeiting measures, modest even by regional standards of the period.

P#99 circulated heavily in everyday commerce and worn examples vastly outnumber clean ones in dealer stock today.
